Last night I was watch Robert Altman"s California Split (1974) and it reminded me a lot of Uncut Gems. After doing a quick google search I found an interview while doing press for Good Time, where they mention the film as being an influence on their work. Some of the similarities I found were: Dialogue - Altman is famous for his overlapping dialogue and there are many scenes in Uncut Gems where the characters yell and talk over each other. This is prevalent in many scenes in California Split. The dialogue itself sounds almost improvised in California Split as well, it sounds so naturalistic and real. Uncut Gems reflects that as well since it just sounds like real people talking instead of stilted or rehearsed lines. All the pauses and beats in the dialogue feel real and naturalistic. Themes - Both films deal with gambling and the highs and lows of it. George Segal"s character falls in with Elliot Gould"s character in California Split through their mutual love of gambling. As the film progresses, Segal"s character gets deeper and deeper into debt similar to Adam Sandler"s character in Uncut Gems. Segal has a meeting with a bookie played by the film"s screenwriter Joseph Walsh, that seems incredibly similar to scenes with Adam Sandler and some of the people he owes money to, in that he keeps pushing for time and the bookie is reluctant to give it. By the end of the film Segal"s character has to pawn his car and typewriter just to have enough money to bet to earn back all the money he owes. By the end of the film he wins big but no longer finds any joy in it at all and just goes home with his earnings instead of continuing. Sandler"s character has more in common with Elliot Gould"s who spends his life gambling and always enjoys the thrill of it. In one scene the characters bet on who can name all the seven dwarfs. Similarly, Sandler"s character will bet on anything, even the tipoff of the basketball game. A true gambling addict never stops gambling. Characters - The characters look and feel real. The Safdie brothers cast real people and non-professional actors for many bit parts and as extras mainly for their look and feel. The two brother bookies that Sandler owes money to are an example of that. The faces and appearances of these people don"t look like Hollywood actors. Altman also cast real gambling addicts in the California Split and real professional gamblers such as Amarillo Slim, a real world series of poker winner, who plays himself. Similarly, the Safdie Brothes cast Kevin Garnett and The Weeknd as ficitional versions of themselves. This gives both films a feeling like this is happening in the real world and does not feel like you are watching a movie. Costumes - the costumes in both films don"t look like nice tailored clothing and don"t always look like they fit perfectly. This gives the feeling that these are actually the character"s real clothes. They are sometimes tacky and gaudy and lack some sense of style. In most Hollywood productions, all the clothes fit perfectly and each character has a sense of fashion. In these two films the characters wear what is comfortable to them and don"t really go for style. I would say this applies more for the supporting and background characters in Uncut Gems since Sandler likes to dress kind of flashy and so does his wife. His clothes however look a little too big on him suggesting he is just trying to fit into this role he plays of the successful businessman and gambler. The two main characters in California Split dress differently. Elliot Gould wears what looks like cheap thrift store quality clothing that he doesnt really put much effort into caring for. He is a professional gambler and that is what his main focus is. Segal"s character"s clothing wears more preppy wear since he is not really a professional gambler. He works at a magazine full-time and presents himself more as a guy who gets sucked into this world but is not really a part of it. These are just some similarities I"ve noticed. I"d love to hear from people who have seen both films and what they"ve noticed. If you enjoyed Uncut Gems and haven"t seen California Split, I highly recommend it. For film fans in general, California Split is one of Altman"s best and is often overlooked.

It"s not your standard Adam Sandler slapstick comedy. So if that is what you want... go rent Waterboy. This is an intense and exciting look into a flawed gambler who owns a jewelry store.
I think the filmmakers did a great job of putting us into his world. It may not be a place that everyone wants to go... but I did feel like I was in that world for 2 hours. In that way... I found the movie to be well made and Sandler"s acting was perfect for this role. Adam is able to make me care about this guy who is clearly making many mistakes and is very flawed.
The directors make a lot of unconventional decisions. I enjoyed that. The movie surprised me. and most these days are just the same thing over and over. So this had a true original to it. Score, editing, camera work all were something you might not be used to. but I found it refreshing and it certainly kept me entertained.
Not going to be for everyone... but I thought it was a great movie.
